InspireU Students Visit WorkingMouse HQ
On September 19, WorkingMouse had the pleasure of hosting an incredible group of young minds from the InspireU STEM Camp at our headquarters. The InspireU STEM Camp is a fantastic initiative that provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10, 11 or 12 with a week-long immersive experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It gives students the opportunity to explore potential study options at university and discover the diverse careers out there in the world of STEM.
A Welcome to WorkingMouse
When they arrived, the InspireU students were introduced to the WorkingMouse team, who gave them an overview of our company, our culture, and the exciting projects we work on. The students learnt about our specialisation in legacy system rearchitecture, a focus that defines our goal to evolve software to meet the modern needs of businesses.
Dr Eban Escott, the founder of WorkingMouse, then spoke to the students, sharing his journey from starting out in the tech world to founding Codebots and leading WorkingMouse. In his speech there were three things he said to remember:
- UQ is the best university ;)
- IT can take you anywhere
- Tech is a great industry to jumpstart your career
Creating the Next Big App Idea
The main activity for the day was a hands-on challenge that put the students' creative and analytical skills to the test. They were tasked with coming up with their own app ideas and designing wireframes. Working in groups, they brainstormed concepts that could solve real-world problems. This process allowed them to experience what it’s like to think like a developer—turning abstract ideas into tangible designs.
It was great to see the students engage so passionately with the challenge, as they explored how technology could be used to make people’s lives easier or bring positive change to their communities. The WorkingMouse team helped each group refine their concepts, offering insights into user experience design and the process of transforming ideas into functional software.
Pitching, Prizes, and Celebration
Once the groups had finished their wireframes, it was time for the presentations. Each group pitched their app ideas to the WorkingMouse team, and we were impressed by the creativity and innovation—some of which were so well thought out they could be the beginnings of real apps!
The WorkingMouse team then picked a winning group and gave shout outs to individuals who were amazing presenters. The winners received thier very own WorkingMouse 'Mastery with Practice' tshirts to acknowledge their hard work. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to connect, share experiences, and inspire one another
Inspiring the Next Generation of Tech Leaders
We loved having the InspireU students visit our headquarters and were inspired by their enthusiasm for learning about technology. Our collaboration with InspireU aims to ignite a passion for STEM careers among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and show them they belong in the tech industry.
At WorkingMouse, we’re committed to supporting initiatives like InspireU that create opportunities for the next generation to learn, grow, and innovate. The future of tech is bright, and we can’t wait to see what these students achieve.
