New Women in IT Scholarship and RAP to Boost ICT Diversity

WorkingMouse is expanding our commitment to diversity in Brisbane’s ICT sector. Starting next year, we’re launching a new Women in IT Scholarship in partnership with UQ, alongside our existing First Nations IT Scholarship. Additionally, we’ve submitted our first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to Reconciliation Australia as the next step in contributing to diversity in the Queensland software development industry.

Women in IT Scholarship

In recognition of the gender equity imbalance in technology, the UQ Women in IT Scholarship Aims to encourage more women to pursue careers in IT and software engineering. The scholarship provides a $5,000 bursary to help cover study-related expenses, and if recipients' fields of study align with our organisational needs, they may also be offered part-time employment opportunities during the final years of their degree.

First Nations Scholarship Continuing

We are also continuing to support First Nations students through our Indigenous in IT Scholarship, which will remain an ongoing initiative for students attending the University of Queensland (UQ). The Codebots Indigenous Scholarship  has been running for 5 years and provides $5,000 for one year to assist with educational expenses. Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and be enrolled full-time in an approved program. If the recipients' areas of study align with our organisational needs, we will offer opportunities for part-time employment during the final years of their degree.

Reconciliation Action Plan

Over the past few years, WorkingMouse has actively engaged with Indigenous Elders and First Nations advocates to help shape a meaningful Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This reflects a key group value 'Connection with Empathy' by fostering reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Our RAP focuses on key areas such as building relationships, showing respect, creating opportunities, and maintaining accountability. By implementing this plan, we aim to contribute positively to the national reconciliation movement and promote a culture of inclusivity within our organisation.

Celebrating Culture and Diversity

Last year, we hosted a company values event where we had the privilege of watching a Nunukul Yuggera Aboriginal dance performance. We also welcomed the InspireU students to our office, providing them with valuable insights into the world of technology and software development. We actively participate in events that promote diversity and inclusion, like the UQ Jobs for Our Mobs career event, to connect with and support Indigenous talent. These experiences reinforce our dedication to meaningful engagement and cultural appreciation.

At WorkingMouse, we believe that diversity and inclusion are catalysts for innovation. Through initiatives like our scholarships and the RAP, we are dedicated to creating a tech industry that reflects the rich diversity of our society and offers equitable opportunities for all.
